The recent fires in Pacific Palisades, Eaton Canyon, and other Los Angeles County communities have left many displaced and needing support. Our hearts and prayers are with all those affected by these wildfires. We are grateful to report that as we continue to check on our family, friends, clients, staff, and colleagues, everyone is safe and out of harm’s way. There are no words to describe the feelings we all share. We are here to help, answer questions, and provide support however we can. To those facing loss or uncertainty, we stand with you during this difficult time—a heartfelt thank you to all the brave first responders protecting our community.

Here are some key points to remember when supporting a grieving friend or relative after a devastating fire:

  • Active listening:
Be a supportive listener, allowing them to express their grief openly without judgment, offering practical help when needed, and encouraging them to seek professional support if their grief seems overwhelming or debilitating.
  • Avoid clichés:
Don’t say things like “everything happens for a reason” or “it could have been worse” as these can minimize their pain. Avoid minimizing their loss, offering quick fixes, or pushing them to “get over it” as grief is a complex process that takes time.
  • Simple expressions of empathy:
Say things like “I’m so sorry for your loss,” “I know this is difficult,” or “It’s okay to feel however you feel right now.”
  • Offer practical assistance:
Ask if they need a place to stay, a way to get around, help with errands, cooking meals, or childcare.
  • Respect their space:
If they need time alone, give it to them. Sometimes just being present in silence can be comforting.
  • Share memories:
If appropriate, share positive memories of the home they lost to help them feel connected.
  • Be patient:
Grief is a process that takes time, so be patient with their progress and fluctuations in mood.
